EVIT’s “88.7 The Pulse” Wins National High School Radio Honors

Current 88.7 The Pulse (KVIT-FM) students and May 2024 graduates of the Radio/Audio
Production program at the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT), won two national awards
at the 2023-2024 John Drury High School Radio Awards. The winners were announced during a
ceremony in Naperville, IL on Saturday, November 2 nd .


Current EVIT senior Lenore Carey won for Best Sportscast, placed second in Best PSA for her
production about Autism Awareness, fourth in Best Public Affairs Show for her show “The Public
Pulse,” which spotlighted Make-A-Wish Arizona, and was a finalist for Broadcaster of the Year.
Also, Arizona State University freshman Adam Beadle (Hamilton ’24) took first place in the Best
Sports Talk Show category for his weekly show “The Adam Beadle Sports Show.”


Madelyn Hadley (Casteel ’24) took third place in the Best DJ category, while Asa Lindsay
(Chaparral ’24) & Axel Borobia (Saguaro ‘24) placed fourth in Best Talk Show with “The I-Tech
Show.” Nick Banda (Desert Vista ’24) also took 4 th place in the Best Promo category for his
production highlighting EVIT Expo. Also placing fourth in the Best Use of Video category were
Diego Puga (Highland ’24) & Nick Shultz (Desert Mountain ’24), who were featured in a video
about the “Pulse Records on Main” music recording studio. Jason Richey (Perry ’24) finished 5 th
in Best Sports Play-by-Play and was a finalist for both Broadcaster of the Year and Outstanding
Student Leader.


At the station level, 88.7 The Pulse took fourth place for Best Website (www.887thepulse.com),
while also placing fourth for Best Use of Social Media (5 th Annual Senior Salute on Instagram).
Also, Dave Juday, Radio/Audio Production instructor at EVIT and one of the faculty advisors for
The Pulse, was named a finalist in the Best Station Advisor category, while The Pulse was also a
finalist for Radio Station of the Year.


“I’m incredibly proud of the showing by our students,” Juday said in a press release. “These
awards are a testament to their hard work and the dedication they have to see our program &
radio station succeed.” 88.7 The Pulse General Manager Michael Mallace added, “I could not be
prouder of the team. These recognitions affirm the impact of EVIT in shaping the broadcasters of
the future.”


Overall, EVIT received 16 nominations in 15 different categories this year. This is the sixth year
that EVIT students have competed in the John Drury High School Radio Awards, a national
competition, presented by North Central College in Naperville, IL and WONC-FM. The awards
are named in honor of legendary ABC-Chicago news anchor John Drury. 88.7 The Pulse is a two-
time winner of Best High School Radio Station at the 2020-2021 & 2022-2023 Drury Awards.
The Pulse is a centerpiece of EVIT’s Radio/Audio Production program, located at the Main
Campus of EVIT. It is a 15,000-watt FM public radio station that showcases the talents of the
students enrolled in the program.
