Father-Daughter Coaching Duo Drives Girls Flag Football Growth in the East Valley
Girls flag football is rapidly reshaping the athletic landscape across Arizona. As a result, it is opening exciting new pathways for female student-athletes. These young women are developing leadership, teamwork, and athletic skills on and off the field.
Recently, host Michael Mallace sat down for a new edition of Eye On EVIT. He spoke with EVIT Radio and Audio Production senior Danielle “Dani” Chiquete. Dani also serves as this year’s Rock-Athon Director. Additionally, her father, Michael Chiquete, joined the discussion. Together, they talked about the sport’s explosive rise. Furthermore, they shared details about their unique bond coaching side by side.
From Cheer to the Gridiron
Dani is currently a senior student-athlete at Eastmark High School. At first, she spent years participating in cheer, dance, and gymnastics. However, she eventually decided to make the jump to flag football. What started as a casual curiosity quickly turned into a dedicated passion.
Today, the father-daughter pair coaches two youth teams together in the Gilbert Youth Football League (GYFL). Specifically, they lead the 12U and 14U divisions. On the sidelines, Dani calls the plays as the offensive coordinator. Meanwhile, her father manages the defense.
Building Confidence Through Youth Sports
The youth recreational league serves as a vital developmental pipeline. For instance, it introduces girls to a fast-paced, 5-on-5 non-contact format. In this environment, sportsmanship and fundamentals take center stage. For Michael, seeing this positive impact makes the volunteer hours worthwhile.
“It was after my first full season with these girls that they actually brought me a signed card with a big thank you,” Michael Chiquete said. “That warm, fuzzy feeling it puts in your heart is what keeps me coming back every season. One of the big goals on our team is to have fun, and that is what it is for everybody.”
Preparing for High School and Beyond
Dani credited her four years of recreational league experience with her growth. Ultimately, it gave her the foundation and confidence needed for high school sports. At the high school level, the game transitions to 7-on-7 schemes with live blocking.
Currently, flag football is expanding into collegiate athletics. In addition, it will make its official debut at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Because of this growth, Dani encourages young girls across the community to get involved.
“It is a really great community, the culture is amazing, and it’s a safe environment,” Dani Chiquete shared. “This is going to be something big. It is a great opportunity to grow, meet great people, and build life skills.”
