After a challenging end to last year’s playoffs, the Phoenix Suns are eager to start a fresh season with significant changes to the team. The excitement is palpable as everyone looks forward to the new season.
New head coach Mike Budenholzer spoke about one of the biggest offseason additions, point guard Tyus Jones. Coach Bud called Jones “an incredible addition.” Jones aims to bring balance to the Suns’ lineup and relieve pressure from their three main scorers. Recently, Coach Bud revealed a new starting lineup featuring Tyus Jones, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant, and Jusuf Nurkic. This lineup is expected to be an upgrade from last year, adding more depth by moving guard/forward Grayson Allen to the bench.
Grayson Allen is set to be a key contributor for Phoenix once again. He mentioned that he now weighs 230 pounds and will have a new role this year as a knockdown three-point threat and a stronger defensive presence on the perimeter with his newly built frame. Coach Bud describes Grayson as a very “underrated” player, emphasizing his importance to the Suns’ depth.
Bol Bol is also expected to have a new role in Budenholzer’s system. The team plans to use an experienced lineup with Jusuf Nurkic at the five and Bol at the four. This lineup worked well last year, and Bol will have more responsibilities this season. Bol called it a “no-brainer” to re-sign with Phoenix.
Bradley Beal is excited for the new season, entering it fully healthy and ready for his second year in Phoenix. Beal says he “just wants to have fun with it.” Last year was tough for Beal as he missed 29 games and struggled to find his rhythm in former head coach Frank Vogel’s system. With the addition of Tyus Jones, Beal can return to his scoring ways with new opportunities.
The Suns are in a much better position this year with their added depth and new coaching. They have a stronger chance to compete for a championship. Expectations are lower this year, which could work in the Suns’ favor by reducing pressure. Phoenix will kick off their preseason with a game against the LA Lakers on October 6th.
