Showmanship: A Conversation with “The Navajo Warrior” Steve Islas

Author: Lance Reece
Since the late 19th century, one thing has remained a cornerstone of professional wrestling: showmanship. From the rough-and-tumble days of grapplers in smoky arenas to the theatrical spectacle of modern sports entertainment, pro wrestling has always been about athletic theater. One man who embodies this tradition—both then and now—is wrestling icon and strongman Steve Islas, known to fans as The Navajo Warrior.
A Legacy Built on Strength and Showmanship
Hailing from Gilbert, AZ, Steve Islas began his professional wrestling career in 1989. For over 35 years, he has entertained crowds worldwide, becoming a respected veteran in the industry. Now, as he approaches the final chapter of his in-ring career in November of this year, Islas sat down with 88.7 The Pulse student Lance Reece on his show Wrestlezona to reflect on his storied journey.
How The Navajo Warrior Got His Name
Steve’s career is filled with unforgettable moments, but the origin of his ring name stands out as a true wrestling legend:
“I happened to have a match with WWE, an untelevised match, and Howard Finkel was the ring announcer. When he introduced me, he called me ‘The Navajo Kid.’ But when the match ended, he announced, ‘And your winner… The Navajo Warrior!’ I’m sure it was a mistake on his part, but it was such a cool mistake that I went with it … I’ve always thanked him for that ever since. Before he passed, I made sure to tell him, ‘You’re the one who named me Navajo Warrior.’”
This is just one of the many incredible stories Islas shares during his interview—offering a glimpse into the rich history and passion behind the squared circle.
